From the police blotter

Crime doesn’t pay, even if that crime is just one inflating his or her own grades.

That’s what a federal grand jury has accused John Escalera, 29, of Fresno, Calif., and Gustavo Razo Jr., 28, of Pasadena, Calif., of doing. The duo has been charged with conspiracy, honest services wire fraud, unauthorized access of computer and identity theft.

Escalera allegedly hacked into Fresno State’s network and accessed the names and passwords of employees who could change grades. After deciphering the passwords, Escalera made “upgrades” for himself and Razo, who allegedly paid for the hack, according to this report in the Central Valley Business Times.

Fresno State discovered the breach when auditing its grading software.
