Information is leaking out about a hacking incident at a regional bank in the Midwest that resulted in the breached information of 20 customers.

While the number of victimized customers of Commerce Bank may be small, the types of personal information stolen are serious – account numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and mothers’ maiden names.

According to a report in the Lawrence Journal World, security officials shut down the breach after they detected illegal activity.

The FBI is investigating, and the bank, which has offices in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo., and branches in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma and Colorado, is providing credit monitoring services for affected personnel.

Information is scarce, but this doesn’t seem to be a case of someone stumbling on a misplaced file. This hacker, or these hackers, knew exactly what was valuable.

Again, not just the large, national banks are being targeted by this type of threat. Regional banks and credit unions are just as vulnerable, if not more so, because of smaller IT staffs.
