Can a U.S. Navy fleet really be shut down by cyberattack?

File this one under “cyber-saber rattling.”

On the heels of reports that hackers affiliated with the Chinese government or its People’s Liberation Army have hacked into the networks of numerous western nations, British newspaper The Times reported that hackers have a plan to shut down an entire U.S. Navy fleet by cyberattack.

Is it surprising that Chinese hackers are testing the security apparati of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and other western nations? No.

But this report, which projects thoughts of battleship groups floating aimlessly at sea, will likely open a few eyes.
