Virginia is for spammers

Everyone hates spam. But how many people go to court to stop it?

One oversimplified answer is 20,000 – from 100 different countries. At least that’s the number signed on to an anti-spam lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Virginia.

The lawsuit was filed in an Alexandria court on behalf of Project Honey Pot, a division of Unspam Technologies, which was represented by Jon Praed of the Internet Law Group of Arlington, Va.

Why 20,000? That’s the number of people using Unspam’s anti-spam tool.

And why Virginia? The Alexandria federal court has built a reputation for handling spam cases, and a good percentage of U.S. spamming activity happens in the state, according to this report in today’s Washington Post.
